Science
Autumn 1 -Light
Year 3 enjoyed categorising reflective and non reflective materials.
Autumn 2 Rocks
How did sedimentary and metamorphic rock form?
Year 3 investigated the features of different types of rocks. Thinking about how the properties would change depending on what was added to the rock. We added different amounts of water and added it to a table to collect our investigation findings. Then we were able to decide which rocks were affected and which didnt change state.
What is the best stone to make a plaque from?
Spring One
What are contact and non-contact forces?
Year 3 enjoyed investigating contact and non-contact forces.
What affects how objects move on different surfaces?
The children had fun exploring different surfaces and how the level of friction changed the speed of the toy goign down the ramp.
Are there different types of magnets?
Year 3 had the opportunity to test out a range of magnets to see if size or shape would affect the properties of the magnets
What are the properties of magnets and magnetic materials?
Year 3 enjoyed going around the classroom to investigate what objects are magnetic and what objects are not. Then they sorted their findings into a carroll diagram.
How far can a magnet attract?
The children enjoyed testing the magnetic fields of different magnets to see which one would have the strongest pull.
What are the daily uses of magnets?
Spring 2
Can you use the sun to tell time? A question year 3 enjoyed testing for British Science Week. First they used torches to recreate the sun moving around the earth to
understand how the shadows change depending on the position of the sun. Then we watched a time lapse of a post left in the sun and analysed how the shadow
changed with the movement of the sun and how it measures up to the time on a clock.
